About Dr. Lawrence Bakur

A particularly poignant moment in my life occurred in elementary school when I was growing up in the 1950’s in Brooklyn, New York. It was in third grade that the honor student of the class suddenly began sobbing uncontrollably. We found out later that his pain was due to the fact that his father, who was a chiropractor, had been taken to jail for “practicing medicine without a license.” That was the first time I heard the word Chiropractor and although I never consciously thought about it again during my early years, that incident obviously made quite an impression on me.
Many years later, while in college at Eastern Oregon State College, my girlfriend and her mother persuaded me to see a chiropractor for the back pain I was experiencing. I was reluctant at first because I’d heard that chiropractors were “quacks”.
“There’s nothing so absurd that if you repeat it often enough, people will believe it.” -William James
But the ineffectiveness of the medical approach finally led me to my first chiropractic adjustments. Of course, the chiropractic care worked like a charm. In addition to that, a seed of inspiration was planted that would eventually shape my destiny and lead to a career in chiropractic myself.
I enrolled at New York Chiropractic College in 1974 and it was there that I learned the basics of anatomy, physiology and adjusting technique, etc. But my real training in the art of healing occurred outside the realm of academia through my associations with veteran chiropractors who were on the inside track in terms of what makes chiropractic tick and they gladly and willingly shared with me their understanding and awareness of how healing takes place. They generously provided me with an amazingly rich foundation from which to offer service to others and I am eternally grateful.
When I graduated I worked as an associate doctor in Louisiana where I began to develop my own unique healing skills (as well as enjoying the fine cuisine!) After a few years the urge to return to my roots brought me back to the New York metropolitan area and I set up a practice in Madison, New Jersey, remaining in that area for many years where I offered classes and workshops in health and healing. Later on I returned to New York City where I saw patients out of my Manhattan office but eventually, the promise of a warmer climate called me to California. It's good to be here!
